Leading
Internet Service Provider (ISP) InfoChannel Limited,
has announced that it is “capable and ready to provide
Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) service to our customers".
According to Mr.
Patrick Terrelonge, CEO of InfoChannel, “with DSL technology
we will be able to provide our subscribers with much
greater speed for Internet access, 'always on' connectivity,
faster data transmission and a host of other services,
including video-on-demand, which will save time and
increase efficiency of telecommunications."
“We have the capability
and are ready to make this available to our subscribers,
as soon as our local telephone service makes the necessary
changes to the existing infrastructure”, Terrelonge
stated.
In explaining the
scope of DSL, Mr. Terrelonge said it is a modem technology
that “enables existing telephone lines to facilitate
a range of high speed communications”. He said with
the use of DSL technology, information can be transmitted
at up to 20 times faster than is currently possible.
Accessing this technology
in Jamaica at this time will require the partnering
of the telephone company with other Internet service
providers to make DSL available in the island. This
type of collaboration, he said, “is the norm in the
United States and Europe."
Mr. Terrelonge added,
“We are aware that the changes are being made and testing
is now being done. We expect the completion of this
process very soon, at which point we will offer DSL
service at highly competitive rates.
